Economic Indicators Bulletin for Southeastern Europe - April 2018

2017 was a year with significant corrections in the SEE banking systems’ imbalances, as NPLs moderated substantially – with the exception of Cyprus. In detail:

  • In Albania, non-performing loans moderated significantly at 15.7% as a percentage of total loans in 2017 from 23.1% in 2016.
  • In Bulgaria, non-performing loans reached 12.8% as a percentage of total loans in 2017 from 15.9% in 2016.
  • In Cyprus, non-performing loans remain in significantly high levels at 43.7% as a percentage of total loans in 2017 from 47.2% in 2016.
  • In Romania, non-performing loans moderated at 6.4% as a percentage of total loans in 2017 from 9.6% in 2016.
  • In Serbia, non-performing loans moderated significantly -following the new directives of NPLs reporting- at 9.9% as a percentage of total loans in 2017 from 17.0% in 2016.
